Gingerbread House Decorating Ideas

These directions are for a realistic-looking shingle roof. Use cereal or crackers such as Chex, Frosted Mini Wheats, Cinnamon Toast Crunch, Wheat Thins, Triscut Crackers, etc.

For a more traditional-style gingerbread house roof, use colorful candies such as gumdrops, peppermints, Skittles, etc.

Important: When decorating the roof, it is important to work on a section at a time because royal icing dries very quickly. Do not apply icing to the whole roof at once! The icing will dry before you finish.

Step 1Apply a strip of icing across the bottom edge of the roof.

Step 1Lay down your “shingles” along the strip of icing, leaving no space between the individual pieces. On the bottom row, have the shingles hang over the edge of the roof slightly.

Step 1Pipe another strip of icing directly above the row you just put down.

Step 1Place the next row of shingles so they are slightly overlapping the previous row.

Step 1Repeat this process until you reach the top.
